AS/NZS 4114:2020 is a standard that outlines the requirements for the design, construction, installation, maintenance, and testing of spray painting booths, designated spray painting areas, and paint mixing rooms. It covers various types of spray booths, including those with baking or heating cycles using direct or indirect heating systems. The standard aims to ensure the safety of electrical equipment by conforming to the requirements specified in AS/NZS 3000, Wiring Rules, and the relevant requirements of the AS/NZS 60079 series.

It is important to note that this standard may be complemented or overridden by specific legislation or other codes. While AS/NZS 60079.14 does not mandate conformance to AS/NZS 4114, it accepts it as a means of compliance. However, spray booths constructed and installed according to other codes or standards may be acceptable if they can demonstrate conformity with the essential safety requirements of AS/NZS 3000 and the AS/NZS 60079 series.

AS/NZS 4114:2020 applies to all types of paints, including those based on flammable liquids, water-based paints, and water-soluble paints. Water-based or water-soluble paints may still contain organic solvents. It is important to note that the standard does not apply to dry powder-type spray booths or operations, which are covered by AS 3754, nor to ovens used solely for drying or baking purposes.

The standard does not address certain specific issues, such as the toxicity of products or vapors resulting from activities. Additional precautions may be necessary in such cases, and ventilation arrangements may need to exceed the requirements for controlling background concentrations in hazardous areas. AS/NZS 4114 also does not cover water quality and associated health aspects like legionnaires disease, or the disposal of wastewater and contaminated waste products resulting from spray area washdown.
