Standard EN SampleElectric Flexible Cords
Also Known As:
AS/NZS 3191:2008 (R2019) is a standard that specifies the construction, dimensions, and tests for electric flexible cords. These cords are insulated with thermoplastic or cross-linked materials such as PVC, elastomers, or polyolefin. The standard covers cords designed for working voltages up to and including 250/250 V, 250/440 V, or 0.6/1 kV.
It is important to note that compliance with this standard does not automatically imply suitability for a specific end use. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the intended application to ensure the appropriate selection of the cord. The standard is specifically intended to apply to the types and sizes of flexible cords that are included. However, it does not rule out the use of other types or sizes of flexible cords, and regulatory authorities can consider granting a Certificate of Suitability for connection to the supply mains for other types and sizes as they are developed.
The standard also provides purchasing guidelines in Appendix A and offers a means of selecting cords to replace designated cords in the IEC 60227 and IEC 60245 standards, as used in the AS/NZS 3350 and AS/NZS 60335 series of appliance standards, as shown in Appendix B. To ensure appropriate current ratings and correct flexible cord selection for the intended application, it is recommended to reference AS/NZS 3008.1.
