Standard ENStandard Specification for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Copper and Copper-Clad Steel Composite Conductors
Also Known As:
ASTM B229-12 (R2017) is a standard specification that covers concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from uncoated hard-drawn round copper wires in combination with hard-drawn round copper-clad steel wires. These conductors are used for general purposes as overhead electrical conductors. The standard classifies the conductors into different types, including Type A, Type C, Type D, Type E, Type EK, Type F, Type G, Type J, Type K, Type N, Type P, and Type V.
The specification outlines that welds and brazes may be made in copper rods or copper wires before final drawing. However, in composite conductors containing a total of seven wires or less, joints are not allowed in the finished copper wires. In other conductors, welds and brazes may be made in the individual copper wires forming the conductor. Joints or splices are also permissible in the finished copper-clad steel wires, as long as they provide equivalent protection and do not compromise the strength of the stranded conductor.
The standard also provides guidelines for determining the density, mass, and resistance of the wires. It emphasizes that SI values for density are considered the standard, while inch-pound values are standard for all other properties, with the SI units being approximate.
