The BS EN 60079-31:2014 standard specifies the requirements for electrical equipment and Ex Components that are designed to be used in explosive dust atmospheres. This standard is an addition to and modification of the general requirements specified in IEC 60079-0. It should be noted that if there is a conflict between the requirements of this standard and IEC 60079-0, the requirements of this standard take precedence.

It is important to mention that this standard does not apply to explosives that do not require atmospheric oxygen for combustion or to pyrophoric substances. Additionally, it does not apply to electrical equipment or Ex Components that are intended for use in underground parts of mines or surface installations that are exposed to firedamp and/or combustible dust. While this standard does not consider risks associated with the emission of flammable or toxic gas from the dust, additional protective measures may be necessary for applications where electrical equipment can come into contact with both combustible dust and explosive gas.

When electrical equipment also needs to meet other environmental conditions such as protection against water ingress or resistance to corrosion, additional measures may be required. However, it is crucial that these measures do not adversely affect the integrity of the enclosure. This second edition of the standard replaces the first edition published in 2008 and includes technical revisions such as the measurement of the marked maximum surface temperature on both the external surfaces of the enclosure and the internal components for equipment with types of protection "ta". The standard also introduces additional protection for arcing and sparking parts for "ta" and adds a test for the internal enclosure for level "ta".
