The PD CLC/TR 60079-33:2015 standard provides guidelines and requirements for the assessment, testing, and marking of electrical equipment, components, and Ex (explosion-proof) components with special protection "s". This standard is applicable to electrical equipment that uses a method of protection not covered by existing standards in the IEC 60079 series, equipment where the design and construction do not fully comply with the standard for the type of protection, or equipment used outside the parameters of the scope of the standard for the type of protection.

The standard is not intended for equipment that is already covered by other IEC 60079 equipment standards unless it can be clearly demonstrated that compliance with the type of protection is not feasible and additional measures are taken to establish an equivalent equipment protection level. The standard is applicable to Group I, Group II, and Group III equipment, as well as different equipment protection levels defined in IEC 60079-0.

The standard includes specific guidance for assessment and testing in the annexes. It supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0, with the requirement of this standard taking precedence in case of conflicts between the two. The standard allows for the use of special protection "s" in cases where equipment requires a higher Equipment Protection Level (EPL) than the underlying protection techniques provide, with additional control measures or design and test requirements applied.

It is important to note that parts of equipment that can be designed and tested using standardized techniques should be done so, and only parts where conformance with essential safety requirements is achieved through alternative controls should be considered for special protection "s". Equipment similar in attributes and performance to other equipment with a specific type of protection should be reviewed first for that method of protection before considering the use of special protection "s".
