The BS EN 60079-5:2015 standard specifies requirements for the construction, testing, and marking of electrical equipment, parts of electrical equipment, and Ex components. This standard specifically addresses the type of protection called powder filling "q" which is designed for use in explosive gas atmospheres.
Powder filling "q" can be used to protect a range of electrical components, including electronic circuits, transformers, relays, switches, and more. It provides Equipment Protection Level (EPL) Gb or Mb, indicating its effectiveness in preventing the ignition of explosive gases.
This standard complements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. In case of any conflicts between the requirements of this standard and IEC 60079-0, the requirements of BS EN 60079-5:2015 take precedence.
The standard applies to electrical equipment, parts of electrical equipment, and Ex components with a rated supply current of 16 A or less, a rated supply voltage of 1,000 V or less, and a rated power consumption of 1,000 W or less.
