The standard covers various Groups and Equipment Protection Levels (EPLs) for different explosive atmospheres.

BS EN 60079-28:2015 supplements and modifies the general requirements of IEC 60079-0. In cases of conflicts between the requirements of the two standards, the requirements of BS EN 60079-28 take precedence. The standard applies to various types of optical equipment, including LED and laser equipment, but excludes certain equipment such as non-array divergent LEDs, luminaires, and optical radiation sources for specific applications.

It is important to note that the standard also provides scope exclusions for certain enclosure constructions, specifying that enclosures should not be opened in the explosive atmosphere to ensure protection against ingress.
