The BS EN 61800-2:2015 standard focuses on the general requirements and rating specifications for low voltage adjustable speed A.C. power drive systems. These systems include semiconductor power conversion, control, protection, monitoring, measurement, and A.C. motors. The standard applies to systems that feed A.C. motors from a BDM connected to line-to-line voltages up to 1 kV A.C. 50 Hz or 60 Hz, and voltages up to 1.5 kV d.c. on the input side. It should be noted that systems with higher rated converter input voltages are covered by IEC 61800-4, while adjustable speed D.C. power drive systems are covered by IEC 61800-1. Traction applications and electric vehicles are excluded from the scope of this standard.

The purpose of the standard is to define the principal parts, ratings and performance, specifications for the environment, and other applicable specifications of an A.C. power drive system (PDS). It provides minimum requirements that can be used to develop specifications between customers and manufacturers. Compliance with this standard can only be achieved when each topic is individually specified by the customer or by product standard committees.
