Standard ENRequirements for Electrical Resistance Trace Heating and Heating Device Sets
Also Known As:
CSA C22.2 No. 130:16 (R2021) is a standard for electrical resistance trace heating and heating device sets. It is the fourth edition of this standard and supersedes previous editions published in 2003, 1990, 1993, 1985, and 1974. The standard is issued by the CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.
The scope of the standard covers trace heaters, surface heaters, and heating device sets for use on system voltages not exceeding 750 V. It applies to heating devices installed on or in metal and non-metallic pipes, tanks, vessels, and related equipment, as well as various surface heating applications. Some of the typical applications include protection against freezing, maintaining required temperatures, earth thermal storage, hot water temperature maintenance, surface heating (floor, ceiling, wall), snow melting, and de-icing of roofs and gutters.
However, the standard does not apply to devices that heat or stress relieve pipes or vessels using eddy current, induction, skin effect, or direct electric current through the pipe or vessel wall. It also does not apply to heating elements using carbon ink dispersion. Additionally, the standard does not encompass heating devices for use in hazardous locations, as the requirements for such devices are covered by a different standard.
The measurements and units used in the standard are in accordance with the International System of Units (SI), with values in parentheses provided for information and comparison purposes. This standard has been developed as a National Standard of Canada in compliance with the requirements of the Standards Council of Canada.
