The CSA C22.2 NO. 213-17 standard is a harmonized standard developed by the CSA Group and Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). It provides minimum requirements for the design, construction, and marking of electrical equipment for use in hazardous locations.

The standard covers equipment and components used in Class I and II, Division 2, and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code, Part I). The equipment covered by this standard is not capable of causing ignition of the surrounding atmosphere under prescribed conditions, although it may contain electronic components used in an incendive circuit.

Additionally, the standard aims to establish uniformity in test methods for determining the suitability of the equipment and associated circuits and components in relation to potential ignition of flammable gases, vapors, combustible dust, easily ignitable fibers, or flyings in hazardous locations.

The standard also applies to associated nonincendive field wiring apparatus located in non-hazardous (unclassified) locations that are designed to directly connect to nonincendive field wiring in hazardous locations.

The requirements of the standard take into consideration specific ambient conditions, such as temperature, oxygen concentration, and pressure. Equipment specified for atmospheric conditions beyond the limits defined in the standard may require additional investigation.

It is important to note that the standard does not apply to specified ignition mechanisms unrelated to the electrical characteristics of the equipment, electric luminaires for use in Division 2 hazardous locations, electric motors and heaters (unless they are integral parts of the evaluated equipment), and battery-operated flashlights and lanterns in the United States (covered by UL 783).
