CSA C22.3 No. 1:20 is a standard. The 11th edition of this standard is part of a series of standards issued under the Canadian Electrical Code. This edition supersedes previous editions dating back to 1940. The major changes in this edition include revised scope, new and revised definitions, revised accessibility and usage of guy insulators, addition of clauses addressing wireless communication antenna and clearances for natural gas and propane equipment, revision of conductor temperature for thermal loading conditions, inclusion of historical weather loads, climate change adaptation requirements, and clarified requirements for effective grounding of non-current-carrying items.

The standard also includes minimum vertical design clearances and separations, minimum clearances to above-ground pipelines and bridges, design clearances between wires crossing each other, and flashover distance tables. Annexes provide guidance on the use of prior versions of the standard, point of attachment for supply conductors to buildings, information criteria for wood pole structures, mean annual maximum snow depth for selected locations, and covered conductor bundled systems.

This standard applies to electric supply and communication lines and equipment located outside or inside buildings employed by utilities. It covers construction requirements for overhead systems, including installations that are alone, in joint-use, in proximity to other facilities, and crossing railways, highways, waterways, or land likely to be traversed by vehicles or pedestrians. The standard provides a choice between deterministic and reliability-based design methods and prescribes minimum design requirements for safety, continuity of service, and protection of property. Conditions not covered by the standard are governed by equivalent standards or the authority having jurisdiction. The use of specific types of construction is envisaged, but alternatives can be used if they can demonstrate safety and suitability.
