ICEA S-83-596:2011 standard provides guidelines and requirements for fiber optic communications cables used in buildings. The cables covered in this standard are designed for installation in both exposed and concealed areas within buildings. They may be surface-mounted or installed within walls or attics, with or without external protection such as conduit. These cables are used to transmit communication signals, including voice, video, and data, within a building. They may be factory terminated with connectors or splicing modules.

If a composite cable, consisting of both optical fibers and metallic conductors, is required, the specific requirements for the metallic conductors should be agreed upon between the end user and the cable manufacturer. The requirements established in ICEA S-90-661 should be considered in determining these requirements.

The standard also mentions that there may be cases where indoor cables can be modified to create indoor-outdoor weatherized cables. These will be covered in more detail in ICEA S-104-696, which is to be released in 2009. It is worth noting that MDU (multi-dwelling unit) cabling, which is an emerging system topology for FTTX (fiber-to-the-x) applications, can utilize the cables specified in this standard.
