IEC 60331-1:2018 is a standard that specifies the test method for evaluating the circuit integrity of electric cables under fire conditions, specifically fire with shock at a minimum temperature of 830°C. The standard applies to cables with a rated voltage of up to and including 0.6/1.0 kV and an overall diameter exceeding 20 mm. It is important to note that this standard is not applicable to cables with diameters smaller than 20 mm, as they are covered by a separate standard (IEC 60331-2).

The standard provides details on the specific point of failure, continuity checking arrangement, test sample, test procedure, and test report requirements for electric power and control cables. However, it does not provide these details for metallic data and telecom cables or optical fiber cables. The standard also allows for the procedure to be used on cables with a rated voltage of up to and including 1.8/3 (3.3) kV, with the agreement of the manufacturer and purchaser, provided suitable fuses are used.

Annex A of the standard describes the method of verifying the burner and control system used for the test. Additionally, the standard includes requirements for an identification mark that can be optionally used to indicate compliance with the standard. This document is a technical revision of the first edition published in 2009 and introduces several significant technical changes, including the extension of the scope to include metallic data and telecom cables and optical fiber cables, improvements in the test environment description, modifications to the steel test ladder, the mandatory use of mass flow meters/controllers for accurate control of fuel and air flow rates, and improved guidelines for the test report.

It's noteworthy that IEC 60331-1:2018 has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104, indicating its importance in ensuring the safety and reliability of electric cables under fire conditions.
