The IEC 60228:2004 standard specifies the nominal cross-sectional areas for conductors used in electric power cables and cords. The standard covers a wide range of types and sizes of conductors, from 0.5 mm2 to 2,500 mm2. It includes requirements for the number and sizes of wires, as well as resistance values.

The standard applies to conductors made of solid or stranded copper, aluminum, and aluminum alloy. It is intended for use in fixed installations and flexible copper conductors. However, it does not cover conductors for telecommunication purposes.

It is important to note that the standard applies to the conductors in the finished cable and not to the conductor as manufactured or supplied for inclusion into a cable. Supplementary information is provided in informative annexes, including temperature correction factors for resistance measurement and dimensional limits of circular conductors.

Some of the notable changes in the 2004 edition of the standard include consolidating material from IEC 60228A, defining nominal cross-sectional area, expanding the range of conductor sizes, providing a note on the higher resistance of solid aluminum alloy conductors, and strengthening recommendations for dimensional limits of compacted stranded copper conductors.
