The IEC 60906-1:2009 standard addresses the IEC System of plugs and socket-outlets with a rated current of 16 A and a rated voltage of 250 V a.c. It specifically applies to household and similar purposes, allowing for the connection of equipment to distribution systems that have nominal voltages ranging from 200 V to 250 V a.c. Despite its coverage of dimensional requirements, it does not encompass plugs and socket-outlets rated 15 A 125 V a.c. for household and similar purposes, which are meant for connection to distribution systems with nominal voltages between 100 V and 125 V a.c.

In relation to the first edition released in 1986, the second edition of IEC 60906-1:2009 serves as a technical revision that supersedes its predecessor. The key changes incorporated in this edition include removing Class 0 plugs, introducing gauges essential for verifying standard sheet dimensions and IEC 60884-1 requirements, as well as mandating the use of shutters.
