Explosive Atmospheres - Part 28: Protection of Equipment and Transmission Systems Using Optical Radiation
Also Known As:
IEC 60079-28:2015 is a standard that sets out the requirements, testing procedures, and marking for equipment that emits optical radiation and is intended for use in explosive atmospheres. It applies to equipment that is either located within the explosive atmosphere or outside of it but generates optical radiation that enters the explosive atmosphere. The standard covers different groups and explosive protection levels, taking into account the potential hazards associated with optical radiation in explosive environments.
However, it is important to note that this standard does not cover ignition caused by ultraviolet radiation or absorption of the radiation within the explosive mixture itself. Additionally, it does not address explosive absorbers, which contain their own oxidizer, or catalytic absorbers.
This second edition of the standard, published in 2015, replaces the first edition from 2006. It constitutes a technical revision and includes updates and changes from the previous edition. It is recommended to refer to the Foreword of the document for a comprehensive overview of the technical changes between the two editions. Furthermore, an Interpretation sheet from November 2019 has been included in this version of the standard.
