The IEEE 1688-2015 standard establishes specifications and requirements for the control of electromagnetic interference (EMI) characteristics of replaceable electronic modules (REMs). This standard is specifically designed for REMs that are removable and replaceable electronic circuit modules that plug into an equipment rack or frame with electrical interconnections primarily through edge connectors interfacing directly with a backplane. The electrical power input is derived from the backplane power sources.

The scope of the standard emphasizes that REMs are used only as integral parts of other subsystems or systems and may not be used independently. It should not be directly applied to equipment that can be used as a stand-alone system or subsystem. The standard assumes that the rack/frame equipment, including the full complement of REMs, has been tested in some configuration to an equipment EMI standard, such as MIL-STD-461E.

The purpose of IEEE 1688-2015 is to provide interface and verification requirements to control the electromagnetic interference characteristics of REMs. The standard aims to ensure that REMs meet the necessary EMI requirements before integration into a system or equipment, providing risk reduction of EMI before installation.
