ISO 26262-6:2018 is a standard that focuses on the development of safety-related electrical and electronic (E/E) systems in series production road vehicles. It excludes special vehicles and systems designed for drivers with disabilities. It should be noted that there are other safety standards specific to certain applications that can be used in conjunction with the ISO 26262 series of standards.

The standard applies to systems and components that are already under development or released for production after the publication date. It addresses the modification of existing systems, as well as the integration of systems developed according to this standard. The standard specifically addresses hazards caused by malfunctioning behavior of safety-related E/E systems, excluding hazards related to physical factors like electric shock or fire.

ISO 26262-6 provides a framework for functional safety in the development of safety-related E/E systems. It aims to integrate functional safety activities into an organization's development framework, covering technical requirements for implementing functional safety as well as process requirements for demonstrating an organization's capability in functional safety. The standard does not cover the nominal performance of E/E systems.

The standard specifies requirements for software-level product development in automotive applications. This includes general topics for software development, specification of software safety requirements, software architectural design, software unit design and implementation, software unit verification, software integration and verification, and testing of embedded software. It also includes requirements for the use of configurable software. Annex A provides an overview of the objectives, prerequisites, and work products of the standard.
