Standard EN SampleStandard for Grease Filters for Exhaust Ducts
Also Known As:
The UL 1046:2017 standard covers single-stage and multi-stage grease filters used in commercial cooking operations. These filters are intended to be installed and used in accordance with the NFPA No. 96 Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations and the International Mechanical Code (IMC).
The standard does not cover grease extraction devices integral to exhaust hoods or other filter devices designed for use in specific manufacturer's hoods. These devices are tested under separate standards such as UL 710 for exhaust hoods or UL 710B for recirculating systems.
The test methods described in this standard are specifically designed for filters used in exhaust hoods for commercial cooking operations. The main purpose of these filters is to prevent flames from penetrating into the exhaust system beyond the hood collar. The terms "grease" and "oil" are used interchangeably in this standard.
The standard investigates the abilities of filters to limit the projection of flames downstream when exposed to flames on the upstream face, after being loaded with grease in a manner representative of cooking that produces a grease-rich exhaust. It also evaluates the filter's ability to drain any collected grease in a way that prevents it from falling back onto the cooking surface.
The standard does not measure capture efficiency or physical robustness of the grease filter device. These factors, which do not directly affect user or fire safety, can be evaluated using ASTM F2519 Standard Test Method for Grease Particle Capture Efficiency of Commercial Kitchen Filters and Extractors.
