Standard for Portable Electric Luminaires
Also Known As:
UL 153:2021 is a standard that covers portable electric luminaires, which are devices designed for task or ambient lighting. These luminaires are intended to be used in accordance with the National Electrical Code. The standard specifically applies to portable luminaires that are connected to a nominal 120-volt, 15- or 20-ampere branch circuit using an attachment plug, a mating connector assembly, or a non-integral power supply.
In addition, UL 153 also covers portable luminaires that receive power through a USB connection or power over ethernet (POE) using category 5 (CAT5) or similar cables and 8P8C (RJ45) connectors. It is important to note that these portable luminaires do not need to be marked to indicate their power source.
The standard stipulates that the light emitting diode (LED) components and subassemblies integrated into a portable luminaire must comply with the applicable requirements of UL 8750, which is the Standard for Light Emitting Diode (LED) Equipment for Use in Lighting Products.
However, it is important to note that UL 153 does not cover portable luminaires that fall within the scope of other specific standards such as UL 48 (Electric Signs), UL 482 (Portable Sun/Heat Lamps), UL 588 (Seasonal and Holiday Decorative Products), UL 844 (Luminaires for Use in Hazardous Locations), UL 962 (Household and Commercial Furnishings), UL 1018 (Electric Aquarium Equipment), UL 1088 (Temporary Lighting Strings), UL 1230 (Amateur Movie Lights), UL 1576 (Flashlights), UL 1786 (Direct Plug-In Nightlights), UL 2388 (Rope Lights), and UL 8800 (Horticultural Luminaire Systems).
Work lights and portable hand lights that include primary or secondary battery packs are also outside the scope of UL 153 and are covered by the Standard for Flashlights and Lanterns (UL 1576).
