Standard EN SampleCoated Electrical Sleeving
Also Known As:
UL 1441:2018 is a standard that specifically applies to Grades A and B acrylic-polymer-coated, silicone-polymer-coated, or vinyl-polymer-coated electrical sleeving. This sleeving is made from closely woven glass fabric and is intended for use in electrical equipment that complies with the rules of CSA C22.1 or ANSI/NFPA 70. The standard also allows for variation in temperature range and polymer coating, as long as the product meets performance tests and undergoes long-term heat-aging tests.
The standard covers coated electrical sleeving with temperature index classifications ranging from 105 to 240 °C. It is intended for use in the internal wiring of electrical devices and appliances located in dry or damp locations, where standard insulated conductors are not feasible. The sleeving provides insulation for uninsulated or partially insulated conductors, bus bars, component leads, or assemblies of electrical components. However, it should not be used in applications where repeated flexing or severe mechanical stress is expected.
Additionally, the standard includes requirements for oil-resistant coated electrical sleeving designed for occasional or intermittent contact with oil. It excludes unimpregnated or uncoated fabric sleeving due to the openings inherent in its weave construction, which makes it unsuitable for sole insulation. Tubing extruded with reinforcement, extruded electrical tubing, and tubing intended solely for mechanical protection are also excluded. Lastly, the standard does not apply to coated electrical sleeving used as splice insulation in an insulation system above 105 °C.
