Standard EN SampleInsulated Multi-Pole Splicing Wire Connectors
Also Known As:
UL 2459:2018 is a standard that covers insulated multi-pole splicing wire connectors. These connectors are intended for use in both field wiring and factory wiring, and they comply with the Canadian Electrical Code and the National Electrical Code in the United States. The purpose of these connectors is to facilitate the connection of devices, such as prefabricated wiring assemblies, smoke detectors, and lighting products, to the branch circuit conductors of buildings.
The standard specifies that these wire connectors should be compatible with the mating connectors from the same manufacturer. It also covers luminaire disconnects used for purposes such as replacing ballasts or LED drivers within luminaires, or for LED retrofit applications. However, these luminaire disconnects should not be directly attached to branch circuit conductors for interrupting purposes.
The wire connectors in this standard are suitable for use with stranded and solid copper conductors ranging from 30 to 6 AWG. They are also suitable for voltages not exceeding 600V. The ampacity of the connectors is determined based on their size, and the standard provides references to relevant tables and codes.
The standard also explicitly states what it does not cover, including splicing wire connectors for direct burial, splicing wire connectors for voltages exceeding 600V, terminal wire connectors, wire binding screw terminals, and other devices covered by different standards.
