Standard EN SampleStandard for Component Connectors for Use in Data, Signal, Control and Power Applications
Also Known As:
UL 1977:2020 is a standard that outlines the requirements for component connectors used in data, signal, control, and power applications. The standard covers both single and multipole connectors that are intended for factory assembly to copper or copper alloy conductors or printed wiring boards. These connectors are used within and between electrical equipment.
The standard categorizes the devices based on their current and voltage ratings. The types include Type 0, Type 1A, Type 1B, Type 2, Type 3, Type 3A, Type 4, Type 4A, and Type 5. The type designations are not assigned ratings but serve as a guide to determine the appropriate requirements. A device without an assigned current rating is considered to be either Type 0, Type 1A, or Type 5, depending on the assigned voltage rating.
The standard does not directly apply to devices such as cord sets, power-supply cords, attachment plugs, receptacles, pin and sleeve connectors, terminal blocks, telecommunications network devices, wire connectors, or quick-connect terminals. However, it may be used to supplement the requirements within these standards.
The requirements outlined in the standard may not cover all possible situations due to the wide variety of products and designs. In such cases, the requirements of UL 498, which covers attachment plugs and receptacles, can be used to supplement UL 1977. In case of a conflict between the requirements of UL 498 and UL 1977, the requirements of UL 1977 take precedence.
