Standard EN SampleStandard for High-Intensity-Discharge Lamp Ballasts
Also Known As:
The UL 1029:2017 standard defines the requirements for indoor and outdoor ballasts used for operating high-intensity-discharge lamps, such as mercury, metal halide, high-pressure sodium lamps, and low-pressure sodium lamps. The standard applies to ballasts and associated equipment that are powered by alternating-current power supplies with nominal input ratings of 600 V rms or less, in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
The standard excludes ballasts consisting of resistance only, indicating that it does not apply to such devices. It also specifies that open core and coil ballasts are only acceptable for use when installed in lighting fixtures, signs, or other enclosures that are suitable for their intended applications.
Furthermore, the standard highlights the importance of safety. Any product that contains new or different features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems which pose a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury must undergo additional evaluations to maintain the level of safety originally intended by the standard. Products that conflict with specific requirements or provisions of the standard are considered non-compliant. The standard can be revised, and any proposed revisions must follow the established methods for development, revision, and implementation of the standard.
