Standard EN SampleStandard for Cables for Power-Limited Fire-Alarm Circuits
Also Known As:
UL 1424:2020 is a standard that specifies the requirements for cables used in power-limited fire-alarm circuits. These cables are intended for fixed wiring within buildings and may also be suitable for direct burial installations. The standard covers three types of cables: Type FPLP (plenum cable), Type FPLR (riser cable), and Type FPL (cable for general use and in trays, excluding plenum and riser applications).
The cables covered by UL 1424 are rated for 300 volts but are not marked with this voltage rating. Cables that have electromagnetic shields may be surface marked or have a marker tape indicating that they are "shielded." Cables that contain optical-fiber members are marked with "-OF" and may also consist of or contain coaxial members.
Requirements regarding smoke and fire characteristics are specified for each cable type. Type FPLP cables intended for installation in ducts, plenums, or other air-handling spaces are tested for flame propagation and smoke characteristics. Type FPLR cables used in vertical runs or penetrating multiple floors are tested for flame propagation height and temperature. Type FPL cables are subjected to either a UL test or an FT4/IEEE 1202 test to determine their flame propagation and smoke release characteristics.
UL 1424 does not cover cables for electric-light, power, or Class 1 circuits. It also excludes cables for Class 3 or Class 2 power-limited circuits, communications cables, and cables for non-power-limited fire-alarm circuits. Additionally, the standard does not address the optical or other performance of optical-fiber members.
