UL 60335-2-72:2019 is a standard that focuses on the safety requirements for floor treatment machines used for commercial purposes. These machines include powered ride-on and walk-behind machines that are designed for tasks such as sweeping, scrubbing, wet or dry pick-up, polishing, and shampooing of floors with an artificial surface. They have a linear cleaning motion and may be equipped with a traction drive system. The standard covers machines with various power systems, including internal combustion engines, mains-powered motors (up to a rated voltage of 250V for single-phase appliances and 480V for other appliances), and battery-powered motors. Battery-powered machines may also have a built-in battery charger.

However, the standard does not apply to floor treatment appliances for household use, floor treatment machines for commercial use (covered by IEC 60335-2-67), spray extraction machines for commercial use (covered by IEC 60335-2-68), wet and dry vacuum cleaners for commercial use (covered by IEC 60335-2-69), road sweepers, machines designed for slopes with a gradient exceeding 20%, machines equipped with a power take-off (PTO), machines designed for use in corrosive or explosive environments, machines designed for picking up hazardous dusts or inflammable substances, and machines designed for use in vehicles or on ships or aircraft.

The standard also provides notes that highlight additional requirements that may be specified by national health authorities, national labor protection authorities, national water supply authorities, and similar authorities. It also mentions that ride-on machines designed for transport over public roads may be subject to additional requirements. The standard does not cover machines that utilize energy sources or power systems using both battery and mains. It also does not cover machines identified by NFPA 505 as Types EX, DY, and DX.

The standard further provides modifications to Clause 1, including the inclusion of specific energy sources or power systems, exclusion of certain machines covered by other standards, additional requirements for specific types of machines, and references to other electrical codes. It also includes a note that allows the use of this standard for the investigation of components and sub-assemblies in appliances, potentially eliminating the need for certain tests if the components or sub-assemblies comply with this standard.
