The UL 60947-5-2:2014 standard specifies the requirements for inductive, capacitive, ultrasonic, photoelectric, and non-mechanical magnetic proximity switches. These switches are designed to detect the presence of metallic, non-metallic, or sound-reflecting objects, or objects with magnetic fields. The switches are self-contained and have semiconductor switching elements.
The standard applies to circuits with a rated voltage of up to 250 V AC or 300 V DC, operating at a frequency of 50 Hz/60 Hz. It does not cover proximity switches with analog outputs. The objective of the standard is to provide definitions, classification, characteristics, product information, and requirements for the construction, performance, and testing of proximity switches to ensure their rated characteristics.
The standard also includes modifications, such as requirements for equipment used in ordinary locations according to Annex 101.dvb and Canadian general requirements. Additionally, the standard specifies that the equipment is intended for use in an ambient temperature range of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, unless specified otherwise.
