Outline EN SampleOutline of Investigation for Mineral-Insulated, Metal-Sheathed Cable
Also Known As: UL SUBJECT 504
UL 504:2017 is an outline of investigation that specifies the requirements for mineral-insulated, metal-sheathed cable. This type of cable is composed of solid copper conductors that are insulated with highly compressed magnesium oxide and enclosed in a continuous copper or alloy steel sheath, with or without a nonmetallic jacket.
The standard covers cables rated at 600 V, which can have various conductor sizes and constructions depending on the number of conductors. For example, single conductor cables can range from 16 AWG to 500 kcmil, while two and three conductor cables can range from 16 to 4 AWG.
The copper sheath of the cable is suitable for use as an equipment grounding conductor. However, if the cable has an alloy steel outer sheath, one of the insulated conductors must be utilized for equipment grounding purposes.
Installation of the cable should be done in accordance with Article 332 of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. This standard provides guidelines and safety requirements for the installation of electrical wiring and equipment.
