UL 6703:2021 covers latching or locking type PV connectors rated 1500 V ac or dc or less. These connectors can be either free connectors or fixed connectors and are intended for use in solar photovoltaic systems as outlined in Part IV of Article 690 of the National Electrical Code.

The standard includes specifications for single polarity PV connectors suitable for use with insulated, stranded copper type USE-2 or Photovoltaic Wire (PV Wire) rated at different temperatures and voltage levels. It also covers latching or locking type multi-pole PV connectors rated up to 1500 Vac or dc. These multi-pole connectors facilitate connections to and from inverters and similar devices in a PV system.

In addition, the standard addresses PV connectors that do not have defined dimensions in any national or international technical standard. These connectors must be identified and tested with compatible mating parts, preferably of the same brand. However, if multiple manufacturers submit products for evaluation, it is necessary to prove intermatability.

It is important to note that this standard does not apply to PV wiring harnesses or cable assemblies that consist of connectors assembled onto cables. These harnesses are covered by a separate UL standard, UL 9703. PV wiring harnesses may use PV connectors covered by UL 6703 in their assembly, with the connectors factory assembled onto each end of the cable.
