Outline EN SampleDistributed Generation Cables
Also Known As: UL SUBJECT 3003
The UL 3003:2015 standard specifies the requirements for distributed generation (DG) cables, which are multi-conductor cables used in connection with distributed generation equipment/devices such as photovoltaic modules, inverters, and solar trackers. These cables are designed to be used between cable trays and utilization areas. They can have one or more bare or insulated grounding conductors and one or more twisted pairs for signal or communication purposes. The cables have a nonintegrally jacketed construction with an overall jacket.
The installation of DG cables should comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and relevant building codes. The cables can be installed in cable trays, raceways, and supported outdoor locations with the help of a messenger wire. The conductors used in these cables are described in the NEC, and the cables are surface marked with the type of insulated conductor, temperature ratings (wet, dry, or wet/dry), and additional markings to indicate direct burial or resistance to sunlight and oil. However, DG cables do not have a metal sheath or armor.
Connectors and fittings for DG cables are covered in the UL 514B standard for Conduit, Tubing, and Cable Fittings. The UL 3003:2015 standard provides manufacturers, installers, and regulatory authorities with the requirements and guidelines for the safe and reliable use of DG cables in distributed generation applications.
