BS EN IEC 60079-15:2019 standard provides requirements for Group II electrical equipment with type of protection 'n' in explosive atmospheres. The standard is applicable to manufacturers, testing houses, electrical engineers, and industries such as chemical plants, gas works/distributors, and offshore rigs involved in the manufacture, construction, testing, and marking of electrical equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The standard specifies the construction, testing, and marking requirements for equipment with type of protection 'n', which includes sealed devices "nC", hermetically sealed devices "nC", non-incendive components "nC", and restricted breathing enclosures "nR" intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres. It applies to electrical equipment with a rated input voltage not exceeding 15 kV AC or DC and covers equipment where the internal working voltages may exceed 15 kV, such as starters for HID luminaires.

The fifth edition of the standard, published in 2019, replaces the fourth edition and incorporates significant technical changes and extensions. Some of the key changes include allowing equipment with internal working voltages over 15 kV, removing certain requirements like minimum degree of protection, clearance, creepage, and separation requirements, as well as adding new requirements for documentation, industrial standard compliance, and battery usage.
