The BS EN 60079-15:2010 standard outlines the requirements for the construction, testing, and marking of Group II electrical equipment with type of protection "n" intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres. This standard is applicable to electrical equipment with a rated voltage that does not exceed 15 kV AC or DC.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure the safety of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres by preventing the ignition of surrounding explosive gas atmospheres. It covers non-sparking electrical equipment as well as equipment with parts or circuits that may produce arcs, sparks, or have hot surfaces. The standard describes various methods by which this protection can be achieved, which may be combined with other methods described in BS EN 60079-0.
BS EN 60079-15:2010 supplements and modifies the general requirements of BS EN 60079-0, except where indicated in Table 1. In cases where a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of BS EN 60079-0, the requirement of BS EN 60079-15:2010 takes precedence.
It is important to note that compliance with this standard does not imply the removal or lowering of requirements from other applicable standards that the electrical equipment may comply with. Additionally, this standard enhances the requirements for normal industrial applications and may require compliance with other IEC standards for specific equipment components. Type of protection "n" provides Equipment Protection Level (EPL) Gc, as described in BS EN 60079-0.
