Safety requirements for power electronic converter systems and equipment - Part 1: General

SKU173322243 Published by International Electrotechnical Commission IEC Publication Date2022-05-20 Pages CountPages522

The IEC 62477-1:2022 standard applies to power electronic converter systems (PECS), their accessories, and components used for electronic power conversion and switching. It also covers the control, protection, monitoring, and measurement means associated with these systems. The standard is applicable to PECS with rated system voltages not exceeding 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC.

Additionally, the standard encompasses PECS that intentionally emit or receive radio waves for radio communication purposes. It can serve as a reference standard for the production of product standards for adjustable speed electric power drive systems, standalone uninterruptible power systems, low voltage stabilized DC power supplies, and bidirectional power converters.

IEC 62477-1:2022 serves as a group safety publication for PECS used in solar, wind, tidal, wave, fuel cell, or similar energy sources, in accordance with IEC Guide 104. It establishes a common terminology for safety aspects related to PECS, defines minimum requirements for coordinating safety aspects within a PECS, and establishes a common basis for minimum safety requirements for the PECS portion of products containing them.

The standard specifies requirements to mitigate risks related to fire, electric shock, thermal, energy, and mechanical hazards during use, operation, service, and maintenance of PECS. It also provides minimum requirements for PECS designed as pluggable or permanently connected equipment, including systems of interconnected units or independent units.

IEC 62477-1:2022 does not cover telecommunications apparatus, functional safety aspects covered by IEC 61508, and electrical equipment and systems for railway applications and electric vehicles.

This edition of the standard includes several technical changes, such as the inclusion of PECS emitting or receiving radio waves in the scope, improvements in consistency between the concepts of "protection" and "insulation," updated limits for touch current and PE conductor currents, updates to requirements for enclosures, wiring and connections, components, and various added tests and updated annexes.
