Safety Requirements for Power Electronic Converter Systems and Equipment - Part 1: General
Also Known As:
IEC 62477-1:2012 is a standard that provides safety requirements for Power Electronic Converter Systems (PECS) and equipment. It specifically focuses on the components used for electronic power conversion and electronic power switching, as well as the means for their control, protection, monitoring, and measurement. The standard applies to PECS with rated system voltages not exceeding 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC.
This standard can be used as a reference for various product committees producing standards for adjustable speed electric power drive systems, standalone uninterruptible power systems, and low voltage stabilized DC power supplies. It establishes minimum safety requirements for PECS in cases where no specific product standard exists.
The purpose of IEC 62477-1 is to establish a common terminology for safety aspects, coordination of safety within a PECS, and minimum safety requirements for products containing PEC. It also specifies requirements to reduce risks related to fire, electric shock, thermal, energy, and mechanical hazards during use, operation, service, and maintenance. The standard covers both pluggable and permanently connected equipment.
It's important to note that this standard does not cover telecommunications apparatus, functional safety aspects as covered by other standards such as IEC 61508, or electrical equipment and systems for railway applications and electric vehicles.
