ISO 26262-7:2018 is a standard that applies to safety-related systems installed in series production road vehicles, excluding mopeds. It does not cover specific E/E systems in special vehicles or systems designed for drivers with disabilities. This standard complements other application-specific safety standards or can be complemented by them.

The scope of this edition exempts systems and components already in production or under development prior to the publication date. However, it addresses alterations to existing systems released for production prior to the document's publication by tailoring the safety lifecycle based on the alteration. It also addresses the integration of existing systems not developed according to the standard and systems developed according to the standard.

The document addresses potential hazards caused by malfunctioning behavior of safety-related E/E systems and their interactions. It does not cover hazards unrelated to system malfunctioning, such as electric shock, fire, toxicity, and similar risks unless directly caused by the malfunctioning behavior of safety-related E/E systems.

The standard provides a framework for functional safety to guide the development of safety-related E/E systems. It is meant to be integrated into a company-specific development framework, with requirements focusing on technical implementation of functional safety and others addressing the development process to demonstrate an organization's capability in functional safety.

It is important to note that this standard does not address the nominal performance of E/E systems. Instead, it specifies requirements for production, operation, service, and decommissioning, along with related planning activities. Annex A of the standard provides an overview of objectives, prerequisites, and work products included in the document.
