The UL 60335-2-24:2020 standard addresses the safety concerns associated with various household appliances. These appliances include refrigerating appliances, ice-makers, ice-cream appliances, and compression-type appliances that use flammable refrigerants. The standard covers appliances with a rated voltage of not more than 250V for single-phase appliances, 480V for other appliances, and 24V DC for battery-operated appliances.

The standard applies to appliances used in household, camping, touring caravans, and leisure boats. It also covers refrigerating appliances used in non-retail settings such as shops, offices, farmhouses, hotels, and catering establishments. The objective of the standard is to ensure the safe operation of these appliances, taking into account the common hazards encountered in and around the home. However, it does not account for individuals with physical, sensory, or mental limitations that prevent them from safely using the appliance without supervision or instruction. It also does not consider the risks associated with children playing with the appliance.

The standard provides guidelines for the construction and operation of these appliances, focusing on electrical safety, mechanical safety, and the use of flammable refrigerants. It does not cover appliances intended for outdoor use, industrial purposes, or specific hazardous locations. Additionally, it excludes appliances with remote motor-compressors, commercial dispensing appliances, commercial refrigerators and freezers for retail sale, and commercial ice-cream appliances.

It is important to note that additional requirements may be necessary for appliances used in vehicles, ships, or aircraft, as specified by national authorities. Similarly, national health authorities, labor protection authorities, and water supply authorities may have additional regulations in place in many countries. The standard does not apply to appliances assembled on site, appliances with battery-powered refrigeration, motor-compressors, and specifically excluded commercial appliances.
