Standard EN SampleStandard for Rotating Electrical Machines - General Requirements
Also Known As:
UL 1004-1:2020 is a standard that specifies general requirements for rotating electrical machines. It applies to form wound rotating electrical machines rated less than 460 volts and all other rotating electrical machines and linear motors, both AC and DC, rated 1,000 volts or less. This standard covers motors intended to be both field installed and factory installed, although motors intended for factory installation do not need to comply with specific requirements related to ventilation openings, accessibility of uninsulated live parts, film-coated wire, moving parts, and certain sections.
The term "machine" in this standard refers to all types of electric motors and generators, encompassing both AC and DC machines. However, it's important to note that the standard does not cover machines intended for use in hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code®. Additionally, sealed (hermetic type) motor-compressor parts are not covered by this standard; these are evaluated under a separate standard for safety requirements.
If there is no risk of fire or electric shock at a specific machine, part, or circuit, the corresponding requirements in this standard related to fire and electric shock shall not apply to them. Furthermore, a motor provided with a metal enclosure that has no openings through which flammable material, molten metal, burning insulation, flaming particles, or ignited material could fall, or through which a flame could be projected, is excluded from the requirements related to the risk of fire.
