Luminaires - Part 1: General Requirements and Tests
Also Known As:
IEC 60598-1:2020 is a standard that outlines the general requirements and tests for luminaires. Luminaires are devices that incorporate electric light sources and operate at voltages up to 1,000 V. The standard covers various aspects, such as classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical construction, and photobiological safety. This version of the standard is the ninth edition, which replaces the previous edition published in 2014 and its subsequent amendment in 2017.
The new edition includes several technical revisions and changes. Some notable changes include the revision of the requirements for fixing cover live parts of non-user replaceable light sources, the removal of Risk Group 0 in relation to blue light hazard, additional requirements for AC mains appliance inlets related to IEC 61984, the addition of UV protection of cable requirements, the inclusion of EMF safety requirements, revised requirements for functional earth and protective earth, and the addition of protection against fast rotating parts.
Other changes include revisions in rated voltage marking, cord anchorage requirements, touch current and protective conductor current test set-up, requirements for constant light output function and programmable current output, touch voltage limits for interrupted DC voltage, introduction of PELV and Ethernet power supply connection for luminaires (PoE), introduction of IPX9, the addition of requirements for wall-mounted luminaires, alternative thermal tests for luminaires with higher ta marking, revised protective conductor current limits, cross-referencing track-mounted luminaires to Annex A of IEC 60570:2003/AMD2:2019, alternative DC electric strength test, revised requirements for recessed luminaires, revision of torque test on metal glands, changes in the use of bridging capacitors in luminaires, and revision of electrical connection to class III plugs.
