Luminaires - Part 1: General Requirements and Tests
Also Known As:
IEC 60598-1:2014 is a standard that sets out the general requirements and tests for luminaires. Luminaires are devices that incorporate electric light sources and operate at voltages up to 1,000 V. The standard covers various aspects including classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical construction, and photobiological safety.
This eighth edition of the standard replaces the previous seventh edition from 2008 and includes several significant technical changes. It introduces new requirements to cater to the construction methods of LED luminaires, which are increasingly being used in the market. The standard also extends the photobiological requirements, ensuring the safety of users in terms of exposure to light.
Furthermore, the revised standard provides more precise specifications for insulation between different types of electrical circuits. This ensures that the luminaires conform to the necessary safety standards and minimize the risk of electrical hazards. Additionally, the standard has been updated and improved in other areas to reflect advancements and meet current industry requirements.
