Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements and tests
Also Known As:
IEC 60598-1:2008 is a standard that sets out the general requirements and tests for luminaires, which are devices that incorporate electric light sources. The standard applies to luminaires that operate from supply voltages of up to 1,000 volts. It covers various aspects of luminaires, including their classification, marking, mechanical construction, and electrical construction.
The seventh edition of this standard, published in 2008, is a technical revision that replaces the sixth edition from 2003. The standard includes several changes that may affect the certification of luminaires, as listed in Annex R. These changes concern requirements for self-shielded lamps, UV protection, safety extra-low voltage (SELV) requirements, touch current, protective current, electric burn, hot surfaces, terminal blocks with integrated earthing contact, replaceable fuses, access to basic insulation, marking of luminaires not suitable for mounting on normally flammable surfaces, covering with insulation, torque requirements for lampholders, and protection against lamp splashing.
The standard also includes the contents of the corrigenda from October 2011 and December 2011, ensuring that any necessary updates or corrections have been incorporated.
